When we looked at cigar accessories, the ashtray was our first center of attention. Ashtrays have become more and more devalued, a mere necessity for discarding the ash. This is why we began engineering a new and entirely modern interpretation.
Our aim was nothing less than to re-create the ashtray and its meaning: an exquisite place for the cigar, inspiring new thinking and representing a modernist lifestyle. With KENTRON #42K, we created a true cigar hub.
KENTRON #42K is the centerpiece of an intimate cigar assembly - an elaborate, high-tech object that serves as a placement of valuable cigars and a source of inspiration.
With the development of KENTRON #42K, we challenged the limits of today’s metal 3D-printing and additive manufacturing. These technologies are used in state-of-the-art rocket engines and weight-effective Formula 1 racing parts. Until today, manufacturing an ultra-complex piece like KENTRON #42K had not even been possible. Together with our partners, we materialized it.
KENTRON #42K ist not an ashtray. KENTRON #42K is a visionary cigar hub surpassing your wildest expectations.
Together with CellCore, a Berlin company specialized in biomimetic engineering, we created a lightweight backbone structure similar to the veins of a tobacco leaf.
It allows for high stability and torsional strength. The backbone was subsequently filled with 42,000 singular elements arranged in a biomimetic pattern - hence the designation #42K. These elements serve as carrier of the design, giving KENTRON #42K its distinguished shape while adding as little weight as possible.
In a joint effort with CellCore, a German biomimetics design lab, and SLM Solutions, a German manufacturer of latest industrial 3D metal printing technology, we succeeded in creating a solution to precisely print KENTRON #42K with all its 42,000 elements. In an elaborate 8-hour printing process that hits today's technological limits, KENTRON #42K is metal 3D-printed in aluminum.
Biomimetics or biomimicry is the imitation of structures and elements of nature for the purpose of solving complex problems. Living organisms have developed well-adapted structures and materials through natural selection.
Biomimetics has given rise to new technologies inspired by biological solutions at macro- and nanoscale. In a classic design problem, strength and toughness are likely to be mutually exclusive - strong materials are brittle and tough materials are weak. However, natural materials with complex and hierarchical material gradients that span from nano- to macro-scales are both strong and tough.
Metal Additive Manufacturing, or metal 3D printing, offers unrivaled design freedom with the ability to manufacture parts from a wide range of materials. Components that could not have been employed just a few years ago can now be manufactured/printed to high standards.
3D Printing is a technology that produces three-dimensional parts layer by layer from a selected material, be it polymer or metal-based. Raw material powder is spread in layers onto a substrate plate. Usually, the layers have a thickness of 20 to 100 microns (µm = 0.001 mm). Once the powder layer is distributed, a 2D slice is melted. State-of-the-art systems use two or more lasers with different power under an inert gas atmosphere. The melting process is repeated slice by slice, layer by layer, until the last layer is melted and the parts are complete. Then the object is removed from the powder bed and post-processed according to requirements.
